Ferme Birkdale

Birkdale Farm began in 1920. The founders, Guy’s grandparents, immigrated from Birkdale in England, to Comox on Vancouver Island. The first Ayrshires arrived at the farm in 1950. The business objective has always been production with functional conformation. Today we can see the results of its judicious crossbreeding. The Birghdale herd is especially known for the “Countess” family. All present members of this family are descendants of Birghdale Countess 8, EX-4E-2*. She herself had a lifetime production of over 73,500 kg of milk ! Her most famous descendant is, no doubt, Countess 24, EX-4E. She has produced 73,331 kg in 6 lactations. She also has two proven sons at Semex Alliance, Copper and Tradition. Countess 13 is another example of production and longevity, one of Countess 8's daughters, who had a lifetime production of over 100,000 kg of milk in 9 lactations. Balanced breeding showing longevity and production, that’s Birkdale Farm’s trademark.

Blackaddar Farms

George L. Boswall & Sons

The first Ayrshire arrived at Blackaddar Farm in 1910. Blackaddar became a well-known prefix in the Ayrshire breed for its high production, strong conformation and longevity. The living proof is Blackaddar Starlet EX-90-3E, who has produced a total of 135,804 kg of milk in eleven lactations; an average of 12,346 kg per lactation. Presently, twelve cows in Canada have produced over 100,000 kg of milk. Three of them have the Blackaddar prefix and are in first, second and fifth place. The herd’s strength comes from its cow families, especially that of Lundale Hope. Many well-known animals such as Milkmaid, Margot, Emily 2 and many others who left their mark in the farm’s history are descendants of this 8* brood cow. Besides raising good cows, the Boswall family also raised and are continuing to raise many good bulls. Blackaddar M M Patrick and Blackaddar BB Kellogg are two of their many proven bulls. Patrick distinguished himself as an exceptional sire of sons while BB Kellogg has marked our show rings in a spectacular way. Over the decades, the Blackaddar prefix has become synonymous of quality and high production.
