Helpful Hints from the registrar
1- If you are registering a bull calf, please
remember to forward a hair sample on the calf to
the office. The registration connot be processed
without this.
2- If you are registering ET animals, please make
sure that a copy of the flush report is forwarded
by your veterinarian or flush technician to the
office. This is required for all ET progeny.
3- All flush dams must be DNA registered. ET progeny
from the resultant progeny cannot be registered
until testing is complete.
4- Have questions about DNA? Here are some helpful
tips :
Collect the hair from the tip of the tail (switch).
Comb or brush the tail to remove the dead hair.
Wrap about 5 strands around a finger, about 2 inches
away from the skin and give a sharp pull. Inspect
the hairs and make sure the follicies are still
attached to the hair shafts. Hairs with no follicies
cannot be processed for DNA. Pull about 20 hairs
per animal.
Send by courier to Saskatchewan Research Council,
Bova-Can Laboratory, 15, Innovation Blvd., Saskatoon,
SK, S7N 2X8 Pn: (306) 933-7700 Fax: (306) 933-5505.
The cost of processing hair samples is $50. per
animal plus taxes. However some work may be more
costly if it is required by the lab to do extensive
analyzing of the sample. Invoices for Ayrshire
work will be issued by Ayrshire Canada. Do not
send money to Bova-Can.
Once the hair samples are analysed, the results
will be returned to Ayrshire Canada. A copy of
the results will be retained in the office. As
well, a copy will be sent to you. The invoice will
be sent at this time.
5- If you have received a registration paper that
has an error on it, this is not a big problem.
Please forward the incorrect paper back to the
office, with notation on what the error is. It
will be corrected and re-issued to you right away.
6- All dairy producers in Canada are able to register
through their Dairy Herd Improvement program using
the ERA program. CanWest DHI, VALACTA and ADLIC are
all set up to help you. Keep your registrations
up to date, and reduce your paperwork!
7- Transfers : All transfers will be paid by the
owner, unless a letter is sent with the transfer
stating who will be charged.
Always make sure the registration is sent and
signed on the back.
