Classification

Classification is an essential tool for good management of dairy breeding. Because of this evaluation system, the Ayrshire breed has greatly improved over the years and has acquired exceptional qualities that make it an extremely functional and durable cow. This tool allows for better selections for traits that minimize monetary losses associated to premature culling.

Data from classification have many uses. First, the breeder uses this tool for better management of his/her breeding program, at the production level as well as conformation. Secondly, classification is used for the bulls’ genetic evaluations. The points given to the animal are divided into four parts, 40% for the mammary system, 25% for dairy strength, 25% for feet and legs and 10% for the rump.

The mammary system which represents the highest percentage includes the udder texture, median suspensory ligamant, the height and width of the rear udder attachment, the strength of the fore udder attachment as well as the udder depth and placement of teats. Dairy strength is mistaken for dairyness. However, dairy strength consists of much more than the flesh condition associated to dairyness. It is composed of the stature, the height at the fore-quarters, the brisket width, the body depth and angle and openness of the ribs. The feet and legs include the foot angle, the heel depth, the bone quality, and the side and rear view of the legs. Finally, the rump consists of the height of the pin bones compared with the hips bones, the width at the pin bones and the strength of the loin between the back and the rump.

Classification indicates the way to go for the future. Evaluation criteria are set in order to constantly improve the cow’s conformation. It helps us, among other things, to develop our herd and to get information that is useful in making informed and profitable management decisions. At the next visit from the classifier, don’t hesitate to ask questions in order to better understand the points given to your animals. He will be happy to share his knowledge with you.
